On Saturday, December 13 Representative Ann Kirkpatrick visited with SaddleBrooke Democrats at the home of Rollie Prager. It was her second annual holiday visit to thank all those who assisted in her recent victory, to share information and to get input from her constituents.

She first discussed her recent election, informing us that it was the fourth most expensive race in the country; $17 million dollars were spent just on CD1! The cost of running for office has increased tremendously over the past several years since she first ran.

She then discussed several recent votes in Congress including the recent budget agreement and her vote to allow the land swap to a foreign mining company in Superior. She went into the environmental, tribal and financial issues that state representatives addressed before voting to allow mining to restart.

As usual, there were many questions from residents on such issues as the status of the Affordable Care Act, the prospects for tax reform in the new Congress, who will likely run for president two years from now and the recruitment of young people to run for office considering the costs involved.

All in all, it was a most interesting and valuable get-together, and local Democrats certainly appreciate Ann’s considerable efforts to involve all of us. The SaddleBrooke Democratic Club meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in the Activities Center.
