Presidents’ Cup to Honor Past MPMGA Presidents

The highlight of the Mountainview-Preserve Men’s Golf Association (MPMGA) schedule in March is the Presidents’ Cup. Two days of individual competition on March 18 and 21 will determine flight winners who will automatically qualify for the season-ending Tournament of Champions. Past presidents, whether participating in the tournament or not, will be guests of honor at a luncheon following the conclusion of play. Not only will these titans of the boardroom be the recipients of a shower of love and affection, but they will also eat free!

Other more mundane tournaments in March include a four-man, 2 best balls plus bonus battle on March 7; a two-man, better ball par three tussle on March 14; and the AGA Qualifying tournament on March 28.

There were also important events in February, including the rescheduled Tournament of Champions on Feb. 15 and the Stampede on Feb. 26 and 29. Flight winners of the Tournament of Champions included Bill Bender, Michael Volz, Don Erickson, Glen Hanson, Harry Clausen, and Ron Pozzi. Hanson was the overall winner of the net division, turning in an other-worldly score of 67. Bender, with a 77, was low man in the gross division. The Stampede was yet to be played as of SaddleBrooke Progress print deadline, so results will have to wait until next month.

Not to be forgotten among February tournaments was the annual Mars-Venus Tournament featuring coed teams from MPMGA and Mountainview-Preserve Women’s Golf Association. Although inclement weather shortened the second round, all the participants had a great time. Lunch and beer or wine tend to improve golfers’ moods. Brian Komar, Cathy Quesnell, Mike Healy, and Jenni Farquhar won the first flight, while Al Bolty, Kim Cox, Len Kirklin, and Aleta Rosenthal took second flight honors.
