Mountain Vista takes honors at the SARSEF
Each year Mountain Vista School students participate in the Science Fair sponsored by the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF). The Science Fair is coordinated by Mrs. Verdean Smith, the seventh and eighth grade science teacher. The Science Fair this school year was held on December 3, 2015. Kindergarten through second grade submits class projects, third grade are groups of four, fourth grade are partners and fifth through eighth grade students submit individual work.
The projects of the first place winners from grades fifth through eighth and teachers who would like to submit a class project are entered in SARSEF. The projects are graded by a panel of judges and awards are presented. This year’s SARSEF awards ceremony was March 2 through 5 at the Tucson Convention Center.
Mrs. Amy McDonald’s first grade class won the SARSEF Grand Award: Second Place Excellence in Arizona Hydrological Research for their project, The Water Games.
Mrs. Julie Formo’s first grade class won the SARSEF Grand Award: Second Place NASA Earth System Science Award for their project, Gardening with Ollas.
Ms. Kristin Moreno’s third grade class won the SARSEF Grand Award: First Place for their project, The Dangers of Household Chemicals.
Fifth grade student Elena Hendrix was awarded the SARSEF Grade Award: First Place Arizona Science Center Never Stop Wondering Award for her project, Soil Garden vs. Straw Bale Garden.
Eighth grade student Phaius Wolgast won the SARSEF Grand Award third place for his project, Do You Know the Back of Your Hand?
Elena Hendrix’s first place project will be entered in the State Science Fair in Phoenix.
