News from GLAAS: Bigger, better and more fabulous than ever!

The guest speakers for the February 9 meeting were representatives from an organization called Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). PFLAG is a national advocacy and support group that began in 1973 by a mother whose gay son’s attack and beating was shown on TV while the police did nothing to protect him and simply looked on.

It was a great evening for sharing and education. Many of our Allies shared their feelings about raising their gay and lesbian children and befriending those rejected by their families.

Upcoming events:

March 9 5:30 p.m. Sonoran Room, SaddleBrooke TWO: A presentation on Gay and Lesbian History by Nell Brownell, Ph.D., American history, Brown University.

Come join an exploration of some key episodes in the formation of gay identities in American history, from the first private clubs of “bachelor” men in the cities of the late 1700s to the “Boston marriages” of 19th century women to the modern gay rights era. Along the way, we’ll consider the category of “gay history” itself, and place the American experience against a wider sweep of historical development.

March 18 4:00-6:00 p.m.: Open house at the new Absolutely Art Gallery and Gifts, 16701 N. Oracle Road, just south of Camp Bow Wow. Wine and appetizers and a chance to meet some of the artists, which include several of our members.

April 13 Social at the SaddleBrooke One Activity Center: Check our website for updates

May 11: Masterpiece Cakeshop vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission: Does a baker have the right to refuse to bake a wedding cake for a same sex marriage? Come hear the actual oral arguments before the US Supreme Court. Discussion and wedding cake afterwards.
