MV Lady Putters Swing to Putting and Music

Dee Rock

It is true that being outside to putt on Monday mornings is good for one’s health. It is also true that music is good for one’s soul. MountainView Lady Putters (MVLP) are fortunate to enjoy benefits of both putting and music. During monthly luncheon meetings, Jo Ann Wilbour effortlessly sits at the grand piano in the MountainView ballroom and provides MVLP with musical standards from her sizable repertoire. Ladies are seen tapping their toes or humming along, and they always show their appreciation with applause.

The benefits of Jo Ann’s musical talent go two ways. She says, “It makes me feel good,” when others show their appreciation. Another’s appreciation shows in smiles and toe-tapping, but sometimes in tears or sharing a memory that a certain song recalls. When Jo Ann joined MVLP in 2022, she was aware of the volunteer requirement and asked about playing the piano. Thankfully, the answer was “yes.” A thank you also goes to her mother who arranged her first piano lesson when she was five years old. Music freely flows through Jo Ann’s life. Beside playing for MVLP, she has played for family and assisted living sing-alongs, a summer stint with a country western band, and Senior Village entertainment.

As an active member of the SaddleBrooke community, Jo Ann enjoys a book club, duplicate bridge, WOOO (Women on Our Own), and, of course, MVLP where her name regularly appears on the award list for most holes-in-one. She also has the title of Music Matinee Coordinator for Senior Village where she schedules, makes arrangements for, and promotes entertainers for free concerts. While she has never memorized the music she plays, she admits she does have more confidence now to play in front of others than she did years ago when she declined an opportunity to play in a concert venue at Carnegie Hall. Thank you, Jo Ann, for nourishing MVLP with the music you play.

Putting awards for June were announced at the July 14 luncheon and business meeting: Ruth Sollin received the Lou Ann Garvin Tiger of the Month Award (lowest net 29.7); Kay Tomaszek, Roadrunner of the Month (lowest gross 36.3); and Barbara Bloch, Hole-in-Wonder Award (most holes-in-one, 8).

During the luncheon, The Grout Doctor owners and MVLP sponsors, Siminett and Brian Milderbrandt, presented information about their business specialties to refresh existing tile and stone installations. They offer regrouting, recaulking, cleaning, sealing, recoloring, and repair and will schedule a free estimate in your home. They graciously answered questions from the attendees. Thank you to Siminett and Brian for the helpful information on home care.
