Ladies join MountainView Lady Putters (MVLP) for different reasons: fun, companionship, being outdoors, and, of course, putting. But few may think of the volunteer requirement: “All members are required to participate on a committee or job assignment at some time during the year so our activities can continue to be successful.”
Regardless of the work involved, it is the act of volunteering that generates much of the fun and camaraderie in the organization. Read on about some of the volunteers who keep MVLP successful and fun.
The organization’s atmosphere starts at the top with dedicated—and fun—board members. President Roxy Heacock, Vice President Carla DeWolf, Secretary Ann Cristofani, and Treasurer Marilyn Ginther keep the pulse of all MVLP activities in check; Sandy Strack maintains an accurate membership roster; Statistician Lorna Kitchen calculates handicaps; Pat Storey oversees special events; Pam Smith and Ruth Sollin advise event committees; and past President Jean Kraus serves as advisory member.
Each board member-at-large is responsible for specific functions. Annette Moyle likes numbers, so each week she prepares scorecards for 18 holes, then reports weekly statistics (guests, holes-in-one, money hole winners, and low scores) to the president and monthly statistics to the statistician. Building friendships describes her seven years in MVLP. Those friendships were especially important during a two-year hiatus due to a health issue.
Every Monday morning Member-at-Large Dottie Adams may be the first to arrive at the putting green and the last to leave. She is responsible for contacting, training, and oversight of the chip starters and the Set-Up and Tear-Down Committees. Throughout her seven years in MVLP, she has looked forward to “the socialization of a tremendous group of ladies.”
Members-at-Large Anne Everett (member since 2021) and Sandy Valeton (member since 2013) are a tag-team duo who recruit and schedule every MVLP member to fill more than 100 volunteer jobs. Rumor has it that Sandy does the talking and Anne does the computer work. Both ladies characterize their involvement with MVLP as a great way to have fun and make friendships.
The Charity Committee functions to raise funds for the Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District. This year, Linda Edwards is spearheading a fundraising goal of $2,000 to purchase new pre-K graduation caps and gowns. Additional funds will benefit the Teacher Educational Fund and Middle School Life Skills Training. Donations will be accepted through October.
Sponsorship Committee members Sandy Valeton (advisor), Marty Fisher, Olga Clouser, Joan Brookhart, and Jan Arruda have enlisted sponsors to support the ongoing activities of MVLP. Gold Sponsors are recognized for $500, Silver Sponsors for $250, and Bronze Sponsors for $125.
Award winners for March are Karyl Steel, Lou Ann Garvin Tiger of the Month Award (lowest net); Patty Stark, Roadrunner of the Month (lowest gross); and Betty Weller, Most Holes-in-One (10).
New members are welcome to join MVLP anytime. For more information, visit the website at mvlputters.com.
