The MPWGA held its annual President’s Cup Tournament on March 17 and 18. The first day action was at the MountainView Golf Course. In keeping with the St. Patrick’s Day date everyone was decked out in green. In addition there were buttons, necklaces and lots of Irish for the day. The day was sunny but with enough wind to make the conditions interesting. The first day saw quite a few red numbers posted with the leader, Donna Barnard, posting a 65. There was a strong group behind her with many scores posted under 70. After the round the ladies enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the patio of the Mesquite Grill where scores were posted and the round discussed and replayed.
The second round was held at The Preserve. Besides the title action, there was also the Mystery Match Play which involved everyone in the battle of the Shannons versus the Erins. This allowed everyone to be involved in a two day net match play although they didn’t know who they were playing. The Preserve proved a bit more challenging but there were still many rounds posted in the 60s. In the end Donna Barnard prevailed adding a second day 64 for a two day total of 129.
The match play between the Shannons and the Erins was tied after the first day with each team garnering 9 ½ points. The Shannons pulled away on the second day adding 12 points to their total for the win.
The tournament luncheon was held in the MountainView Ballroom with a lovely lunch and a lot of scrutiny of the score sheets. The title sponsor (Midge Borchert of Long Realty) was recognized before the awards were handed out. Then Mike Jahaske announced the flight winners and the President’s Cup winner Donna Barnard.
