Hear ye, hear ye! It was the ladies’ turn to host this year’s combined women’s and men’s golf event. And so it was that the MountainView/Preserve Women’s Golf Association (MPWGA) held the King & Queen of Clubs Tournament, sponsored by Harn Legacy (Wendy Harn, real estate attorney). Mary Kay Nordhill chaired the event and called upon her MPWGA and MPMGA subjects to partake in this royal gathering.
First, on Wednesday evening, Aug. 28, a reveal party was held in the MountainView courtyard where the knights and damsels learned of their foursomes. They received a beverage and popcorn made just for them and were also encouraged to practice some of the challenges they would face on the golf course.
Then, on Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, 16 foursomes (64 players) met for the golf tournam
ent at MountainView Golf Course. The event was presided over by King Dennis Marchand and Queen Midge Mollenkopf and club pro, Jester Mike Karpe. The par 3s were all KP (Keen Placement) holes. On hole 7, golfers could not use their putters and, instead, had a choice of silly options, including a bat, tennis racket, hockey stick, and broom. According to Nordhill, “Hole 18 was a 15-yard wiffle ball shot into a wading pool containing water and the K&Q castle. We had no holes-in-one. There were only 10 golfers who made it in two shots, a diabolical hole.”
After golf, lunch in the MountainView ballroom had a Renaissance Fair theme. Nordhill shared, “In keeping with royal protocol, only the King and Queen are allowed to use a fork and knife to eat.” Therefore, club sandwiches and ice cream drumsticks were served.
