The MountainView/Preserve Women’s Golf Association kicked off 2026 with a series of exciting events. On Jan. 6 golfers gathered at The Preserve Golf Course for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start to compete in several high-stakes competitions. Sponsored by Absolutely Art, the day began with partly cloudy skies, warming temperatures, and adorable, grazing goats off hole 10.
The event featured a playoff among last year’s monthly winners to crown the 2025 Ace of the Year. Simultaneously, the field competed for the January 2026 Ace of the Month and participated in a “Low Putts” game. Under association rules, monthly Ace winners are limited to one Low Gross and one Low Net win per calendar year
Congratulations to the 2025 Ace of the Year Gross/Net winners. Karyn Engel (Low Gross 75) composed herself after a triple on hole 1 and birdied holes 2 and 4. Said new MPWGA member Engel, “After my rough start, I just decided to really focus and didn’t even peek at the leaderboard until well into the back nine. By then, things were looking good!” Engel also won January Ace of Month (Gross and Net) qualifying her for 2026 Ace of Year. And she captured KP hole 4. What a day for Karyn. Kim Cox (Low Net 72) also started her round with a triple (on hole 15) and a couple of double bogies to follow. Said Cox, “With my terrible start on 15, 16, 17, and 18, I really thought I was totally out of the game.” After that, she played a solid round, with four straight pars on holes 2-5, setting her up for the Net win. But she said her best experience was petting a baby goat on the back nine.
Then, on Jan. 14, ladies met at the MountainView Course for a Pick Your Team Scramble. The 9:30 a.m. shotgun start was frosty but sunny, and ladies enjoyed warming temps. That evening, a kickoff dinner was held in the MountainView ballroom where congratulations went to the 2025 State Medallion qualifiers Barb Laskowski (Low Gross) and Corky Bosch (Low Net). A new sponsor, Weathersby Windows & Doors, was welcomed, and new members Mia Caulk, Dawn Petty, and Janine Sullivan were introduced. President Lori Stegink shared exciting news that there will now be two KP holes every week. Moore Advantage Team will sponsor the Front KP (19 and below handicaps), and Andy’s Irrigation will sponsor the Back KP hole (20+ handicaps). Finally, Cathy Quesnell announced that the 2025 Most Improved Player was Janey Clausen who has won multiple MPWGA titles and has held a number of club roles. Quesnell joked that Clausen, who dropped from 15.5 to 11.7, doesn’t like to practice and likes to say, “Why waste good shots?!”
