MPWGA Awards 2024 Ace of the Year and Most Improved Player

On Jan. 7 MountainView/Preserve Women’s Golf Association ladies competed for Low Putts/Ace of the Month and Year, sponsored by Pride Mechanical Heating & Cooling. Monthly Ace winners are limited to one win in Low Gross and one win in Low Net each calendar year, and a January playoff determines the winners for Ace of the Year. Fifteen ladies qualified for Gross and 17 for Net. The weather at MountainView Golf Course was good for the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, with cloudy conditions and cool temperatures in the mid-50s. By the last few holes, the sun decided to make an appearance.

Congratulations to the 2024 Ace of the Year winners: Cathy Quesnell (Low Gross 81) had three birdies and one chip-in on the front nine, and Suzan Carter (Low Net 64) also won KP on hole number 4. Quesnell just missed shooting a 36 on the front nine and said, “Things got tight on the back nine when I had some hiccups on 14, 15, and 16, but I recovered, and it was enough for the win.” Carter said, “I started off with a 7 on a par 4 and went on to get an embarrassing 6 on a par 3. So I thought that the norm would prevail. But my luck changed, and to my surprise, my ball started going where I wanted it to go.”

Low Putts flight winners: Flight 1: Jo Helms (28), Flight 2: Ellen Victor (31), Flight 3: Jeana Hodges (29), Flight 4: Mary Miller (27), Flight 5: Claire Baragona (29)

On Jan. 14 the Pick Your Team Scramble at MountainView had a frosty but sunny shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Carter continued her winning streak, as she and team Debbie McMullin, Jacque Twitty, and Randi Roberts scored 55 to win their Flight 2. Flight 1 winners (57) were Lori Stegink, Jane Megrdle, Donna Watson, and Linda Schauer. Flight 3 winners (53) were Diane Cain, Midge Mollenkopf, Linda Berg, and Amy Heinz.

An Awards Dinner followed the Scramble in the MountainView ballroom with event sponsors The Moore Advantage Team (who serve the real estate community and sponsor all of the MPWGA KP holes!) and Wild Fire Wings (who gave out gift cards and are celebrating three years at their Fork and Fire Restaurant on March 15). Jane Megrdle presented the Ace Awards, and Kathy Quesnell announced the Most Improved Player. Quesnell described the player as always being at the course, either playing or practicing, and joked, “That person needs to get a life!” Tracy McGeorge was “that” person, and she received a standing ovation. McGeorge’s handicap dropped from 23.9 to 19.7. She also won in 2022 and has worked tirelessly as MPWGA Sponsorship chair.
