With the rainy first weeks of January a fading memory, the MPMGA finally completed a tournament with no weather problems. The Member-Member Match Play event went off without a hitch and ended with the first luncheon of the 2026 season. It turns out that Christmas, New Year’s, and two rained-out tournaments didn’t help with consistency for most of the field in the Member-Member. The prevailing winners should be proud of their play over three days. Those winners were as follows: John Cahill and Scott Lundgren in the purple-green Flight 1 and Mark Gingerich and Don Sanders in purple-green Flight 2. The green tee flight winners were Dave Field and Carter Luther in the first flight, Doug Zink and Bill Messick in Flight 2, and Paul Caleb and Keith Flewelling in the third flight. Glenn Deutsch and Terry McCarthy won the red tee flight. Gingerich and Sanders took the easy route to victory. They won the first round by default and the third round by forfeit. They only had to beat Ken See and yours truly in round 2 to take home the cash.
The big disappointment for me came at lunch where the usual free beer was replaced by a cash bar! However, my mood changed when the McDivot award winner was announced. Former MPMGA President Dick Helms took the honor by showing up late and missing three holes of the Whiners Tournament. Now he knows the humiliation I’ve felt three times!
The Whiners event took place at MountainView alongside the third round of the Member-Member Tournament. It’s for all the losers who didn’t make it into at least the consolation round of the Member-Member. Scores were calculated after removing the four worst holes from your card. The Whiner winners (in no particular order) were Mike Hughes, Jay Johnson, Tim Ward, Pete Gregor, Jim Hardwick, and Tom Quinn.
The Stampede Tournament is coming up on Feb. 23 and 26. If you’d like to join the fun, contact Dave Quesnell at davidquesnell77@gmail.com for information.
