On Monday, February 29 the Pima Cup Match, originally scheduled for February 1, was finally played at the Highlands at Dove Mountain. The thirty-six golfers representing the six golf clubs that compete in our bracket of the Pima Cup all thanked their lucky stars that they were able to play this match in the weather of late February rather than earlier in the month! Our opponent for this match was the team from the Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club. Our A team was Mark Hojnacki and Doug Johnson and they were matched against the team of Bob Roty and Richard Stone. Our B team was Ted Olson and Gary Hodges and their opponents were Al Rizzi and Dennis Howe. Len Rabb and Daryl Henderson were our C team and they played the team of George Morgan and Jeff Lake. All three of these matches were a battle from start to finish and the final scores clearly demonstrate how evenly the teams were matched. Ventana Canyon won all three matches by a single point (9.5 to 8.5) which made the team total score 28.5 for Ventana Canyon and 25.5 for SaddleBrooke HOA 2. Our team’s point score of 25.5 placed them in fourth place just six points behind the winning team. Congratulations to all for a job well done!
The SaddleBrooke Golf Club hosted our next Pima Cup match on Monday, March 7. The 12:30 p.m. shotgun start was applauded by all participants. The team representing SaddleBrooke Ranch was our competition for this match and all our players knew they would need their best games to prevail. Bob Eder and Jon Aronson were our A team. Rick Fernandez and Dan Schroeder made up our B team and Ron Pozzi and Bob Long were our C team players. To say that our team was up for the competition is a classic understatement—it was our day. Our A team won its match by a margin of two points (10 to 8) and the C team won its match by a single point (9 ½ to 8 ½). Both matches were a battle and all four of you earned our praise for hanging tough. I have heard that there may have been a request for some form of test on our B team after their match. They won, of course, by the score of 13 ½ to 4 ½. Unbelievable is the only word that fits! The 33 points earned by the SaddleBrooke HOA 2 team put them at the top of the leader board three points ahead of the second place finisher. Congratulations to all one more time. Food, drink and chatter were all enjoyed at the Roadrunner Grill after the completion of play. Thanks again HOA 1 for your hospitality.
