The last month has been busy for the Mountainview-Preserve Men’s Golf Association (MPMGA). On Feb. 15 the rescheduled Tournament of Champions reached its conclusion, with Glen Hanson crowned as the overall champion with a net score of 67 on the tough Preserve Golf Course. No one saw this round of golf coming, least of all Glen himself. He’s proof that good guys can finish first. Bill Bender, Michael Volz, Don Erickson, Harry Clausen, and Ron Pozzi were the other flight winners.

The other “major” tournament in February was the two-day Stampede. The foursome event was played in two different formats. Day one was rotating partners, and day two was a game called 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s. The explanation of that format is too complicated for my brain to explain. The flight winners were as follows: Bill Bender, Randy Breier, Steve Gabe, and Tim Ward in Flight 1; Phil Gray, Doug Johnson, Peter Valen, and Jim Creel in Flight 2; and Keith Flewelling, Bob Rosencrantz, Ron Victor, and Mike Healy in Flight 3. There is a rumor going around that Bill Bender will be given a league suspension until his game devolves enough to give the rest of us a chance to win. So far, that’s unverified.

In March another dark horse member took overall honors in the Presidents Cup. Terry Martell blitzed the field with his opening day net 65 and coasted to victory with just a 74 on day two. His $100 first prize was his first time in the money this year. I’m sure he’ll treasure the beautiful plaque that was presented to the winner! Other flight winners were Steve Gabe, Roger Gann, Steve Rose, Ted Olson, Jim Nelson, Phil Gray, Glenn Deutsch, and Angelo Klousiadis.

The Presidents Cup gave us a chance to honor past presidents of the MPMGA with a luncheon after the second round. Personally, a free lunch isn’t quite the incentive I would need to take that job, but that’s just me. The Member-Guest Tournament begins with a shootout on April 18 and continues with two rounds of golf on April 19 and 20. Also included are barbeques, lunches, prizes, and maybe even an alcoholic beverage or two. Fun will definitely be had.
