Saturday, March 9, 2019, found 26 lassies (women) and 26 laddies (men) engaged in 26 individual match play matches on the MountainView golf course as the Gender Cup competition was renewed after being dormant for four years. After the putters were replaced in the bags, the laddies emerged victorious by one lone point, 13.5 to 12.5. The overall standing is now 5-4-1 in favor of the laddies. Matt Hudson, Head Professional for MountainView-Preserve golf courses, was on hand to present the Gender Cup trophy to the winning laddies.
Afterwards the golfers adjourned to the Mesquite Grill for food and libations.
The Gender Cup, like the Ryder Cup, is an individual match between two golfers, in this case, a lassie versus a laddie. Originally setup for couples, but alternately named as the “Divorce Open,” it has evolved to allow non-couples to compete while maintaining harmony in the household. From the beginning, this event has been a close competition with only a few points separating the sides. Almost half of the matches were decided on the last couple of holes. Already the lassies are planning their attack to take back the trophy next year.
