On Wednesday, December 9 the first Pima Cup Match of the new season was played at the La Paloma Country Club. Play began at 12:30 p.m. and everyone was expecting a warm sunny afternoon but once again Mother Nature said that what you golfers really need are cloudy skies with light winds and temperatures a bit below 60. Nonetheless, the course was in excellent condition and as the final scores will indicate the play was highly competitive.
Six clubs (La Paloma, SaddleBrooke HOA2, Ventana Canyon, SaddleBrooke Ranch, Highlands at Dove Mountain and SaddleBrooke HOA1) fielded three two man teams to compete in the match play event. The M-PMGA opponent was the team from the Highlands at Dove Mountain. Our A team was Peter Backer and Doug Johnson and their match was against the team of Bill Bailey and Rudolph Gautschi. Our B team was Richard Hicks and Bob Edelblut and they played the team of Bob Dolan and Jim Ward. Our C team was Jack Hammar and Dan Hoshino and they played the team of Monte Beck and Bill Urie. Congratulations are in order for our C team as they won their match by the score of 11.5 to 6.5. Our A and B teams both lost their matches but only by a combined score of 19.5 to 16.5. Final score—M-PMGA 28, Highlands at Dove Mountain 26. Thanks to all for your efforts.
All players enjoyed a buffet dinner after the round was completed. Yes, there was lots of chatter and even a few prizes were awarded. Lots of fun. The next event will be held at The Highlands on February 23.
