Phil Doyle
Men, like the song says, “all she wants for Christmas is you, baby!” Yes, you and your time. And your partner has always wanted you to learn how to dance. Now is your chance! SaddleBrooke Ballroom Dance Club (SBDC) is giving you a gift to learn to dance for free in time for your holiday parties and New Year’s Eve parties.
Starting in November, Philip and Anne Doyle will be teaching the most useful and common type of dancing, and that is the swing. Now, when some people think of swing dancing, they might conjure up visions of the Roaring Twenties. Well, this is simply inaccurate. The swing type of dance is probably applicable to more than 60 percent of the music you are likely to hear at any holiday party, wedding, or New Year’s Eve dance. Songs danceable to swing include very recent songs, such as “Poker Face,” by Lady Gaga; “You Belong with Me,” by Taylor Swift; and “Catch My Breath” by Kelly Clarkson. Many, many songs, both old and new, can be danced with swing steps.
This class is restricted to newcomers only. People with significant experience will not be permitted. This will enable all of the novice dancers to feel comfortable learning the basics without any pressure whatsoever. It will be fun, and by the end of November, with only one class per week (and one practice session per week) you, too, will be able to dance! Classes will be held Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. in November. (Note: as November is a holiday month, some sessions may be canceled which we will note at the classes and on our website www.sbballroomdance.com.) So, come by Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Mariposa Room at DesertView, and let’s get started.
By the way, “All I Want for Christmas,” by Mariah Carey, is also danced with swing steps!
