Lassies Even Up Gender Cup Standings

The Lassies had a great day for the annual Gender Cup Tournament.

As a gentle breeze floated over the MountainView Golf Course on a warm Sunday afternoon, 44 Lassies and Laddies prepared their golf clubs for the MountainView-Preserve Couples Golf ninth annual Gender Cup. Well, maybe the wind was a little stronger than a breeze and the warm Sunday afternoon was March 15.

The Gender Cup format is individual match play, couples playing against each other; also described as the “divorce open;” however, couples are not required to play against their spouses and may compete against the spouses of another couple. One point is awarded for each match to the winner of the most holes; if the match is even after 18 holes, each player is awarded a half point. The previous eight competitions had the Laddies winning four, the Lassies winning three and one ending at All Square. Following the golf, the competitors met at the Mesquite Grill for the results to be tabulated and enjoyed a BBQ dinner and plenty of socializing. Roger Bedard, coordinator with Food and Beverage, noted that the post golf BBQ was good and ready exactly on time.

This year the Laddies jumped to an early lead, but then the Lassies in the later groups pulled through for a close win by only one match with a close 12 to 10 win, thus evening up the competition. As noted in one Laddie comment, “—one more Laddie win would have tied the score at 11 points apiece.”

The M-P Couples Golf group plays throughout the year on the third Sunday of each month alternating between The Preserve and MountainView golf courses. We offer fun tournaments, closest to the pin awards and great socializing following the golf at MountainView or The Preserve Restaurants. During the warmer months (May through September), we schedule 8:00 a.m. shotguns (to beat the heat and monsoons) and the rest of the year we begin at 12:30 or 1:00 p.m. Applications are usually available in the MountainView Pro Shop by the first of the month and online. All HOA2 residents and HOA2 golf course members are invited to join us. Current USGA handicaps or a calculated handicap index (and we can calculate it for you given at least five scores along with the course and tees played) is required.

You can check out our future schedule and formats and download the applications along with other information on the HOA2 website (www.sbhoa2.org). Just click on Golf/Couples.
