On September 24, the SaddleBrooke Lady Niners and the SBWGA-18 ladies combined forces for our annual LAGOS tournament to welcome in fall. We don’t know how our tournament organizer Opal Larkin did it, but she managed to have the perfect fall day for the event. After a summer filled with sweltering heat, we awoke to a brisk, sunny, cool day just perfect for golf. The name LAGOS was created in 1991 by the husband of one of the founding Lady Niners and it stands for Ladies Amalgamated Golf of SaddleBrooke. The two ladies groups come together for a round of nine holes, followed by a luncheon upstairs in the Vistas Dining Room. Hard to believe, but back in the days when this tournament first got started there were not as many golfers (either men or ladies), so any players who wanted to go back out after lunch simply informed the Pro Shop and went back out for another nine holes. Unimaginable today!
60 golfers turned out for the tournament and everyone had a wonderful time together. The foursomes were grouped into two flights according to handicaps. The winners of the Cholla Flight were Shirley Morris, Eila Sallaberry, Edie Crall and Geri Sandilands. Winners of the Prickly Pear Flight were Julie Egolf, Marsha Camp, Vernie Tupa and Yolanda Niemann. We also had two other winners for the day: Closest to the Line were Judy Mattson for the Niners and Marsha Camp for the 18ers. Big congratulations to all and a huge thank you to Opal Larkin and her committee for providing everyone with such a great time!
After the over-seeding is finished, we have the annual Sputters Tournament in October. This is always a perennial favorite – the Niners combine with the SaddleBrooke Sputters for a round of nine holes, where the Niner plays the ball up to the green and then the Sputter takes over for the putting. Another great opportunity for a fun activity and good camaraderie!
