The Pool Players of The Brooke Billiards Club (PPB) hosted an 8-Ball Singles Tournament on Feb. 22 in the SaddleBrooke One Catalina Recreation Center Billiards Room. Thank you, PPB, for sponsoring this tournament. The format of this 8-Ball Singles Tournament was double-elimination. This is the fourth in a series of five 8-ball tournaments used to qualify for the finals of the PPB’s first annual 8-Ball Club Champion of the Year award, which will be held in April.
The tournament director was Phelps L’Hommedieu. The following field of 16 players showed up to compete in the game of 8-ball singles: Dick “Pocket Blocker” Dunbar, Tony “The Snake” Cardillo, Bill Webster, Joe “Ball Breaker” Vidmar, Dan “Rambo” Sollin, Steve Wiley, Phelps “Montana” L’Hommedieu, Dave Parker, Dick “The Visor” Titus, Jack “Crash” Hoverter, Les Goins, Jim Langseth, Mike Collins, Dominic “The Doctor” Borland, Gary “One Rail” Barlow, and Fred “The Baker” Dianda.
Results:
1st: Joe Vidmar, Vidmar perfect! 5 wins, 0 losses
2nd: Jack Hoverer, always in the mix! 5 wins, 2 losses
3rd: Dick Titus, beat some of the best, 3 wins, 2 losses
4th: Tony Cardillo, tried hard, 3 wins, 2 losses
Recap: Joe “Ball Breaker” Vidmar started out the day by defeating, in order, Les Goins and Fred Dianda. Then he demoralized Jack Hoverter with a table-length kick shot on the 8-ball to send Jack to the loser’s bracket. Dick Titus was Joe’s next victim, and Dick went into the loser’s bracket without objection. Meanwhile, Jack Hoverter was in the loser’s bracket and had worked his way back to have another chance at Joe. Jack would have to beat Joe twice to be the champion today. In the first game, Joe was not going to be beaten, and he made quick work of Jack again for the title. Congrats, Joe “Ball Breaker” Vidmar, winner of the fourth 8-Ball Club Championship qualifier.
