Meet the instructor
Ken Marich
The ILR is proud to have Louise Grabell as a faculty member. Louise was born in Brooklyn, New York and spent her youth in Long Island and in Queens. She earned a B.S. degree in Biology (1964) and a Master’s degree in Science Education (1967), both from Queens College. She also continued her graduate education and earned 60 additional credits at the post-Masters level. Early in her career she applied to America’s Teacher in Space astronaut program. Thankfully, she never made the Challenger fateful flight.
Her love of science and education became her lifelong vocation. She taught numerous classes at the high school level that included: biology, zoology, geology, meteorology and astronomy. She began her teaching career in the New York City school system and then taught in her own suburban schools. Her outstanding ability as a teacher earned Louise a Best Teacher of the Year award from the National Science Honor Society in her school. Prior to working in her school district, Louise was elected to the local Board of Education where she served as trustee for two and a half years. She retired in 2003 after 31 years of teaching and, with her husband Steve, moved to SaddleBrooke in 2004.
Louise was introduced to the ILR by Joel Waldstreicher and taught her first class, Bio-Ethical Challenges of the 21st Century in 2006, the first year of the ILR program. This was the start of her academic pursuit in SaddleBrooke and since 2006 she has taught 13 more science-oriented courses covering a wide range of topics from: Human Evolution, The Origins of Life, ABC’s of DNA, Violent Weather and The Earth’s Changing Climate. Rumor has it that Louise is preparing an exciting course about botany.
When not teaching or preparing for a new class she enjoys gardening, embroidering, astronomy and playing Bridge. Louise is a Master Gardener and is currently the coordinator for the SaddleBrooke/SaddleBrooke Ranch Master Gardeners. Louise and Steve have three children and six grandchildren. Free lecture: Advances in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Ultrasound
Ken Marich
This presentation is free and open to all SaddleBrooke residents. Limited seating, so come early. The lecture will be given by Ken Marich, a research scientist who has spent over 30 years developing medical technologies at the University of California, Davis, Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Research Institute (SRI) and Diasonics. He has published over 60 scientific papers and two books. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 18 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Ballroom West in the MountainView Clubhouse.
The lecture will focus on two applications of ultrasound. The first half of the presentation will focus on Diagnostic ultrasound demonstrating how it works, what diseases can be diagnosed and how Doppler ultrasound has improved the accuracy of diagnosis. The second half of the presentation will concentrate on a new Therapeutic application of ultrasound called HIFU or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. This new technology is in an early phase of development and holds promise to revolutionize conventional surgery. HIFU can target tissues deep in the body without incisions or the use of harmful X-rays. Additional benefits include reduced adverse effects and complications.
In the U.S. HIFU is approved for several conditions, while in Europe and Asia HIFU has had widespread approval for many diseases and conditions. There is no doubt that in the near future HIFU will be approved in the U.S. for many more diseases. Come hear this presentation to better understand how ultrasound is helping your health and to get a look into the future of noninvasive surgery.
The Institute for Learning in Retirement is open to all SaddleBrooke residents and provides a wide range of classes throughout the year. For more information go to www.sbilr.org.
