Helping Hands

Dave Poferl, Bill Rigg, and Roger Shamburg

SaddleBrookers are fortunate to have so many clubs and activities available to us in our community. There is something for everybody, regardless of their interests. But the one thing essential for the existence of every one of these organizations is volunteers. The SaddleBrooke Ballroom Dance Club is no exception. Three important tasks that are key to our club’s continued success are dance instruction, music, and administration.

Dance Instruction

Dave Poferl has been a dance instructor since 2015. He has taught many dances with club member Mary Borkovec and, most recently, taught west coast swing with Dottie Adams. Dave really enjoys instructing people and watching them learn. Dave moved here from Berea, Ohio, in the mid-1990s. He had a successful career with NASA, starting as an aerospace engineer and retiring as a member of their Senior Executive Service. Besides dancing, Dave enjoys playing video games, cribbage, shooting pool, watching sports, and just hanging out with his dog Charlie.

DJ Music

Dottie Adams knew that Bill Rigg enjoyed music and suggested that he become a volunteer. Bill has been one of our DJs since 2021. He usually DJ’s weekly practices and four to five dinner dances a year. There is a lot of preparation, but Bill enjoys helping to make things work for everyone. Bill and his wife Claudia moved to SaddleBrooke from Ventura, Calif., in April of 2004. Before retiring, Bill had a 30-year career as a firefighter and medical rescue worker. Currently, he is on the club’s New Member Committee, as well as helping with his unit’s activities. In addition to dancing, Bill likes playing golf, hiking, and traveling.

Administration

Club members had encouraged Roger Shamburg to run for treasurer, and he was elected in April of 2023. He also “wrangles” when extra male dancers are needed in class. Roger believes it is important to give back, enjoys helping everyone, and loves to see people advance in their dancing abilities. He is very involved with his church and is treasurer of the SaddleBrooke One Men’s Putters. Roger and his wife Linda moved to SaddleBrooke in late 2018 from Colorado Springs, Colo. Before retirement, he had a very varied career, including working in the restaurant industry, middle management in multinational organizations, and eventually with Linda, opening a chain of jewelry stores in Colorado. Other activities high on his list are golf, shows at DesertView and the Gaslight Theater, and travel.

So, what is the bottom line? Volunteers are vital! A big thank you to these three individuals and to everyone who volunteers for the club.
