Sadly, Pinal County students have fallen way behind in reading proficiency. The crucial timeline in reading achievement is 3rd grade when the focus is still on “learning to read.” After that, the focus shifts to “reading to learn.” So, falling behind in 3rd grade becomes a critical obstruction to both academic achievement and, not surprisingly, overall success in life.
The good news is that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. The better news is that you can be a part of it. How, you might ask? By becoming an online Pinal County reading tutor for 2nd and 3rd graders. Grab this opportunity now to lift up your own community in a very meaningful way. Our students really need your help.
Online tutoring is conducted for 30 minutes twice a week on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. There might be a four-week June session coming up this summer. Otherwise, tutoring will begin in the fall. Subs are available to work out gaps in your schedule, or you can offer to be a sub for other tutors.
The training, sponsored by the AARP Experience Corps, is online and takes about seven hours. You can get trained right away and be ready to go when things get rolling. The local program is managed by AchievePinal.org who works with multiple Pinal elementary schools and schedules tutors. Contact donnamariethompson1000@gmail.com to get started. You’ll be glad you did!
