Graphic Design: Molding the Visual Experience

Delys Nast

I have often engaged in discussions with colleagues and students centering on the question as to whether graphic design is art or not. When attending the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, I was given two paths of study to choose from: Art or Design. Art tended to fall into the category of “fine art,” which was visual interpretation through paint or sculpture. Design was focused on visually conveying messaging through print, posters, and, more recently, the web.

The foundation of both art and design contains composition, balance, value, and color, but how the viewer of the piece interprets the information varies with each viewer’s intent.

The Art Salon of SaddleBrooke will explore how graphic design shapes the user’s experience in a discussion led by Delys Nast on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. in the Topaz Room at SaddleBrooke TWO. The Art Salon meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Topaz Room. Each event is free of charge to SaddleBrooke residents.
