On November 9 and 10 the MPMGA played this year’s Club Championship at the MountainView Golf Course. Ninety-one players signed up for the event and as in years past they were assigned to various flights based on their handicaps and tee choice selection. All of the players in the first five flights played from the championship tees and had a chance to become the overall champion. Don’t forget that the score that counts when determining the overall champion is the lowest gross score. Prizes were awarded to both gross and net winners in each flight.
The weather forecast for Wednesday, November 9 was dreadful. High or very high winds were predicted and at 8:00 a.m. they were at full force. Luckily as the morning progressed the winds subsided and for some their day got better. Four players—Al Bolty, Grant Farquhar, Ron Tie and Tony van Natter—shot even par 72 on the day. Congratulations, gentlemen, for a truly remarkable accomplishment! The forecast for day two said things would be a lot better but the winds returned early in the round and conditions got worse and worse throughout the day. The lowest score recorded for day two was 76 by Fred Schneider. Super, Fred!
Okay, here it comes. The new Club Champion is Grant Farquhar with a two-day total score of 149, besting second place finisher Ron Tie by two strokes. Well done, gentlemen. Tony van Natter won the low net championship with a combined score of 134, one shot better than Fred Schneider, Dick Helms, Darryl Henderson and Tom Creager. Wow, was this close!
Other first place finishers, either gross or net in each flight, were Flight 1, low net was Ron Tie; Flight 2, low gross to Fred Schneider and low net to Tim Ward; Flight 3, low gross Dennis Marchand; Flight 4, low gross Rick Fernandez and low net John Cobb; Flight 5, low gross Larry McNamee and low net Bill Hammond; Flight 6, low gross Larry Fox and low net Dick Helms; Flight 7, low gross Darryl Henderson and low net Harry Clausen; Flight 8, low gross Tom Creager and low net Pete Schwartz. Good playing by all.
