February brings two great FSL events to SaddleBrooke
Love to learn about the history of the Southwest? Like to talk to authors about their work? Enjoy owning signed copies of new books? Friends of SaddleBrooke Libraries have two events in February that you won’t want to miss. Both will be held in the MountainView Clubhouse Ballroom.
February 18, 2016, 4:00 p.m. – Chinese Labor, Corruption and the Transcontinental Railroad
The First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States was built in the 1860s, linking the well-developed railway network of the east coast with rapidly growing California. This significant achievement was not without its social, political and financial issues. Lecturer Jerry Miller will provide the story behind the immigrant laborers and the wheeling and dealing that made this vast transportation project a reality.
Non-FSL members will be charged a $5 fee to attend this lecture (you can become an annual FSL member for only $20 per household).
February 20, 2016, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – Southern Arizona Author Expo
Don’t miss this opportunity to meet 62 southern Arizona authors, learn more about their work and buy signed copies of their books. Authors hailing from Catalina, Green Valley, Marana, Oro Valley, Parks, Tucson, SaddleBrooke, Sierra Vista and Vail are gathering for this very special event. Their work ranges from historical fiction to children’s books, mysteries to non-fiction and everything in between. It’s a great way to discover a new author or buy the latest work of a favorite regional writer. Plus, this event helps to support the work of the local authors who help make southern Arizona such a special place to live.
Experience a slice of the Tucson Festival of Books – without the drive or parking challenges. A complete list of participating authors is provided at the FSL website: SBFSL.org. This is a free event.
Tickets on sale for FSL spring author luncheon
William “Kent” Krueger will be the featured speaker at the FSL author luncheon on Monday, March 14, 2016. Krueger is the New York Times best-selling author of 14 mysteries in the Cork O’Connor Series, including Tamarack County and Windigo Island. His novel, Ordinary Grace, won the 2014 Edgar Award as well as the Barry, Anthony and Macavity Awards for Best Novel. His new novel, This Tender Land, is slated for release in spring 2016. Krueger harnesses his intimate knowledge of Minnesota’s northern reaches and his respect for Native American life, ancient and modern, to create haunting novels filled with vivid characters.
The luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the MountainView Clubhouse Ballroom. Tickets are $29 and can be purchased at the HOA2 Administrative Office. The meal is an Asian chicken salad or a vegetarian option. All ticket sales are final.
