The SaddleBrooke Friday Quilters plan on another busy and fun-filled year of sewing and companionship for 2017. The officers were installed at a luncheon in the Agave Lounge on January 13. The 2016 President’s Landscape Challenge was reviewed and judged and the winner was Wendy Butler Berns’ Desert Dreams. Wendy is a snowbird from Wisconsin who is also a published, award winning quilt artist and teacher. She has appeared on both broadcast and on-line quilting shows and we feel fortunate to have Wendy as a member of the Friday Quilters.

Additionally, the outgoing President Beth Bradford was presented with a lovely bouquet of “fat quarters” (quarter yards of quilting fabric). The new officers for 2017 are Debbie Dorman, president, Tina Scott, vice-president, Doree Masters and Jeanne Ragan, secretaries, Doreen Diaz, webmaster and Barb Sosnowchik, treasurer.

Upcoming events include the annual field trip to the Tucson Quilt Guild’s Quilt Fiesta in February and programs featuring thread painting, 3D and embellishment techniques, dealing with all those fabric scraps and a proposed quilt retreat.

The club also sews for local service organizations. Quilts and other items continue to be produced and presented to groups such as SaddleBrooke Troop Support, the Family First Care Center in Oracle, Hayden Senior Center, Youth on Their Own, Sister Jose Women’s Rescue Shelter, Impact and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

Later this spring the club members will be having a Quilt Room Tour where several people open their homes to show their unique sewing spaces, from complete casitas to guest bedrooms and kitchen areas. Lunch will follow and the neighboring Sun City Quilters will be invited to participate.

Organizing is well underway for the club’s semi-annual Quilt Show which will be held on March 11, 2018. Although the show is more than a year away, construction of the raffle quilt is taking place. The design is such that each club member will be able to participate in its construction. All proceeds from the quilt show and raffle go to support the club’s service projects.

For more information contact Friday Quilters President Debbie Dorman at 818-1014. The club meets every Friday at 9:00 a.m. in Craft Room 4 at SaddleBrooke HOA 1. All skill levels are welcome. Come learn more about the group and get creatively inspired for 2017.
