Explore Your Libraries and Beat the Heat

Janet Fabio

If you stay in SaddleBrooke for all or most of the summer, you know that everything slows down. There are fewer activities, and the heat keeps us indoors more in the middle of the day. It’s a perfect time to explore all that your libraries offer.

Planning a road trip? The DesertView Library has hundreds of audiobooks plus portable CD players that work in cars! Check them out just like a book. You can also find useful guidebooks with ideas for road trips and scenic drives in Arizona and across the USA. The library has books about the national parks, too.

Looking for books to take on a trip? Paperbacks are the perfect solution. The SaddleBrooke One Library has more than 1,600 paperback titles, with no due dates! The Cholla Library in the MountainView clubhouse is an honor-system library offering a variety of Fiction, Nonfiction, Large Print books, and paperbacks. Keep them as long as you need while you are away, but don’t forget to return them when you’re back in SaddleBrooke.

Planning a trip abroad? The DesertView Library has an extensive collection of travel guidebooks to learn more about your destination of interest. If you’re staying closer to home, don’t forget the Southwest collection to learn more about local history, try some new recipes with a southwest theme, or look for local attractions and museums in Tucson and Phoenix.

You can browse the shelves for new and older Fiction at all three of our libraries. Find new books by popular authors such as David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, J.A. Jance, Anne Hillerman, and Jeffrey Deaver. Or try an author that might be new to you. For example, for a magical getaway, try The Amalfi Curse, by Sarah Penner. Love historical fiction? Pick up Librarians of Lisbon, by Suzanne Nelson. Cold Burn is a thriller set in two very different national parks. Looking for books recommended by other readers? Stop in the DesertView Library where you can pick up a copy of the list of books being read by book clubs in SaddleBrooke, or a recent list of our library volunteers’ favorite books. There are more than enough ideas to keep you reading all summer. Wondering what new books the library has added recently? Check the monthly lists in SaddleBrooke TWO’s For the Record or SaddleBrooke One’s Communicator to learn about new books in the SaddleBrooke One Library.

When it’s slower in SaddleBrooke, it’s a good time to learn something new. Recent Nonfiction titles include Poets Square, by Tucson author Courtney Gustafson, and the unique travel guide Hidden Libraries. Or go with a big topic in David Attenborough’s Ocean. Learn about an issue closer to home (Lake Powell) in Life After Dead Pool, by Zak Podmore. Peruse the Genealogy collection at DesertView Library. How to Write Compelling Stories from Family History, by Annette Gendler, sounds like a worthy summer project!

DesertView Library has more than 1,400 movies and TV series on DVD. You don’t have to go out in the heat to be entertained. Settle into your favorite easy chair and binge watch a series you’ve been hearing about from your neighbors.
