The Pool Players of The Brooke  (PPB) Billiards Club hosted an 8-Ball Singles tournament on Nov. 4 in SaddleBrooke One’s Catalina Recreation Center (CRC) Billiards Room. This was our first tournament on our brand-new, beautiful, 9-foot Diamond Pro-Am pool tables. Thank you, SaddleBrooke One and the Pool Gods! The format was double elimination.

Tournament director was Joe Giammarino. The following field of 16 players showed up to compete in the game of 8-ball: Dick “The Visor” Titus, Russ Doering, Mike “Mayhem” Meredith, Joe “Fast Eddie” Giammarino, Lowell “8-Ball” Hegg, Tom “Blind Squirrel” Barrett, Randy “Thin Man” Smith, Dominic “The Doctor” Borland, Dick Dunbar, Jack “Crash” Hoverter, Chris Schmidt, Gary “One Rail” Barlow, Tony “The Snake” Cardillo, Fred “The Baker” Dianda, Phelps “Montana” L’Hommedieu, and Les Goins.

Results:

1st: Dominic “The Doctor” Borland, perfect today! 5 wins and 0 losses

2nd: Tony “The Snake” Cardillo, he’s like a pesky fly! 5 wins and 2 losses

3rd: Fred “The Baker” Dianda, good showing on the 9-footers; 3 wins and 2 losses

4th: Gary “One Rail” Barlow, softening up the stroke helped; 4 wins and 2 losses

Recap:

Dominic “The Doctor” Borland was one of a few players I saw who was in control of his stroke on the bigger, 9-foot tables. He proved he was by going undefeated with a 5–0 record. Dominic started by beating Chris Schmidt in the first round, then he sent Lowell “8-Ball” Hegg to the dreaded losers’ bracket. Tony “The Snake” Cardillo was next, and he joined Lowell in the losers’ bracket. Dominic stayed in stroke as he bested Fred to earn the right to be on the hill. Tony was making his way back through the dreaded loser’s bracket to have a shot at Dominic again. Tony earned the chance at Dominic by defeating Fred, and he would have to beat Dominic twice to win the tournament. Not today! Dominic won the first game to take the title of Inaugural 9-Foot 8-Ball Champion. Congrats, Dominic “The Doctor” Borland!
