The MPMGA Member-Guest Tournament has concluded, with Alan Doan and his guest Ron Gillespie named overall champions. Three days of great weather, fine food, camaraderie, and even occasional decent golf defined this event. There was also an unfortunate accident, which perhaps changed the eventual outcome. The twosome of David Jones and Dave Hackathorn, after winning the Shootout and Chapman Scramble portions of the tourney, fell victim to a freak accident. On the third hole of day-three action, Jones hit both his golf ball and a stone simultaneously, causing the ball to fly forward and the stone to hit him on the forehead. I’m imagining quite a bloody scene. Although Jones and Hackathorn were able to complete the round, the trauma allowed Doan and Gillespie to sneak into the victory circle. The other flight winners were John Brubaker and guest Donn Deputy and John Smith and guest Scott Gaines.
Dave Hackathorn also holds the distinction of being the guest who traveled the farthest to play in the contest, coming all the way from Wales, UK. His uncle Dave Jones enjoyed showing his nephew some new restaurants in Tucson, although their tournament winnings didn’t quite cover all those fancy meals!
Over the last few years, the Member-Guest Tournament has lost some of its appeal, so the MPMGA Board of Directors will be putting together a committee to examine ways to improve the event and make it the best tournament of the year. Just remember that to play in the tournament, you need to be a member of the MPMGA. For that, contact Dave Quesnell at [email protected].
It’s been quite a few weeks on the golf course for Alan Doan. A hole-in-one, a win in the Member-Guest, and on April 25 Doan and his partners Henry Clausen, Joe Oczak, and Don Plapinger had the best net score in the Whiners Tournament. I have now decided to make it my mission to try to get on Alan Doan’s team as often as possible.
