The benefits of exercise are well documented and familiar by now. We know exercise boosts mood by lowering levels of stress hormones and increasing the production of endorphins. That’s the clinical assessment. But the thing about playing pickleball for healthy exercise is that it also happens to be great fun. It has quickly become a popular, multigenerational sport open to all skill levels. In fact, according to a recent USA Pickleball report, pickleball maintained its status as the fastest-growing sport in America for the fourth consecutive year. Pickleball can improve cardiovascular health, enhance muscle strength, and contribute to improved coordination and balance. The sport also requires strategic thinking and quick decision-making, which can help keep the mind sharp and improve cognitive function.
“I have enjoyed playing pickleball for five years with the SaddleBrooke Pickleball Club. As an optometric physician, I know it has helped me to maintain my stamina, energy level, and balance. It has also been a way to enjoy the camaraderie of new friends.” —Dr. William Waldman
Pickleball also offers an important secondary health benefit. In addition to contributing to overall fitness, it provides opportunities for making new friends. Meeting people, and team sports in particular, is associated with improved social and mental health. This is especially important for people with limited social interaction. By reducing feelings of isolation, pickleball can contribute to healthier, happier, and longer lives.
