Hi SaddleBrooke Progress friends! I’m Emma, a cheerful little bichon-poodle mix living here in SaddleBrooke with my human Bill. You may have seen us out walking on the golf course paths or cruising in our golf cart. In this column, I’m here to share a dog’s-eye view on your questions about life, pets, neighbors, and all the little things that make our community special. Whether it’s dog etiquette, fun tips, or a little canine wisdom, I’m ready to lend a paw—with kindness, honesty, and a wagging tail!
Dear Emma,
Why do dogs love sticking their heads out the window of a moving car? I’ve always wondered what the appeal is.
Curious in Unit 17
Dear Curious,
Oh, the joy of a car ride with the window down! It’s like Disneyland for the nose! When we stick our heads out the window, we’re not just feeling the breeze—we’re catching a symphony of scents flying by at lightning speed. Every mailbox, tree, and burger joint we pass tells a story, and our noses don’t want to miss a single chapter. It’s exhilarating and overwhelming in the best way!
Of course, our humans should make sure it’s done safely—no leaning too far, and certainly no jumping out (even if there is a squirrel). A harness or cracked window works just fine. But, yes, that wind-in-the-fur feeling? Pure magic.
Tail-waggingly yours,
Emma
Dear Emma,
I have heard of the “Dog Days of Summer” and always wanted to ask a dog what that means. Can you help me, Emma?
Curious Sun-Lover in SaddleBrooke
Dear Curious,
Oh, I love this question. Thank you for thinking to ask me! The “Dog Days of Summer” don’t actually come from us dogs lying in the shade with our tongues out (though that’s definitely part of summer style!). The phrase comes from ancient times when people noticed that the hottest days of the year coincided with the rising of Sirius, the “Dog Star,” in the sky.
But let’s be honest—we dogs do know a thing or two about summer! For us, the Dog Days mean taking it slow, finding cool spots, drinking plenty of water, and skipping the midday heat. It’s our time to practice the art of the siesta and remind our humans to relax a little, too.
So, while the stars may have given the season its name, we pups have made it our own. Stay cool, my friend!
Sun-soaked and smiling,
Emma
