Anticipating

The time of year that can best be described as the Season of Anticipation is upon us. We anticipate snowbird neighbors arriving back to the Brooke; family and friends stuck in tall snow drifts planning visits to meet the challenge of the links and the beauty of the desert’s hiking trails; hauling out the lights and decorations to find the burnt-out bulbs to make just one more run to The Home Depot; and thinking back on memories that bring tears, smiles, and laughter separately or all at once.

Anticipation, in whatever form, always involves the food and drink of the season. We can smell the spices of pine, nutmeg, cinnamon, roasted turkey, hot buttered rum, pumpkin pie—the list is personal and long.

Women On Our Own (WOOO) also celebrate the Season of Anticipation. We realize that there are members who may not have family or friends with whom to celebrate the season. Ruthe Burgener has worked diligently over the past four years to create opportunities for our members who might be alone during the season to celebrate within the community of WOOO. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas are hosted at a WOOO member’s home, with everyone bringing a dish to complement the main star: turkey, ham, or ???. Attendance is usually quite robust, with at least 15 to 20 ladies enjoying the fellowship of the season.

The scheduled events of WOOO are not put on hold, even though the Season of Anticipation can fill up our schedules with unit parties, club celebrations, and travel. Our WOOO Saturdays are still filled with dining events, but we are aware that our taste buds begin to anticipate the amazing flavors of the season. So, avoid, avoid, avoid. First Saturday Happy Hour recently shared delicious meals at Guadalajara on North Oracle. Fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, margaritas—not a speck of nutmeg, cinnamon, or pumpkin to dent the Anticipation of the Season.

If you are a single woman in SaddleBrooke who is not in a committed relationship, consider checking out the many events and activities offered through WOOO. Our membership is over 150 women, and you will find wonderful conversation, laughter, support, friendships, and many opportunities to stay active and engaged in our retirement journey.

Please contact our president Debbie Flato at 520-818-2904 or deblynne50@gmail.com to find out more or to receive a membership form. Our dues are $10 per year.
