Let me take you way back to 1986 on the Big Island of Hawaii. The tennis professional who worked at Mauna Lani Hotel asked resident and member John Sochacki if he would like to play a doubles match with him and his friend. His friend was Brian Sullivan who played in Wimbledon but lost in the first round. Well, Sullivan was known to have a 132 mph serve!
John said yes and immediately called his tennis buddy TJ Duffy who lived on Maui. They were friends working for Xerox at the time. John and TJ traveled to each other’s islands frequently for work. TJ packed his tennis racquets and flew over to the Big Island. Carol Sochacki had a plan for John and TJ on how to intimidate these two pros! Dew rags on their heads and an earring for each, and they were ready for battle!
It was all fun and entertaining for the spectators. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the match ended 6-4, 6-4. Guess who the winners were. Yes, our two STC tennis professionals John Sochacki and TJ Duffy! Guess that plan worked, Carol!
