This month we are welcoming one of our newer arrivals — Jim Wolf. Jim and his wife Sue moved to SaddleBrooke just three months ago in May from Denver, Colorado, where they lived for the past 42 years. Jim worked in IT for the Aerospace Industry until he retired in 2010 when he reactivated his interest in the game of Bridge, experienced the first time as a young man in the ‘50s when his parents played Goren. There were lots of games played at home in Sherman, Texas, but he just observed, confining his card playing to low stakes Poker with jokers, twos and low hole cards wild — no doubt taking money from his fellow teens. While at engineering school in Ames, Iowa, he and college buddies often played their version of Bridge until 4:00 a.m. in the fraternity house—a common way many of us used to avoid studying!
Also, like many of us, Bridge took a back seat to life — developing his career, spending three years in the U.S. Navy (Viet Nam veteran) and caring for his family. Life took him to New York State, California, Texas and finally Colorado and treated him well. After retiring, he and his twin brother John started learning and playing Duplicate Bridge in clubs and tournaments — John lived in Fort Collins and Jim lived in Littleton, a 70-mile commute — so they were committed!
Their most fun Bridge experience together was at the 2014 NABC in Dallas — where they wore Jimmy John tee shirts when playing in the 299er competition. They won and got their story and their picture in the District 17 Newsletter, so from then on they were known as the Jimmy John twins. He hopes to get brother John to come to the NLM tournament in Tucson this September but if not, he’ll be looking for a partner. Anyone interested in learning more and improving their game, contact Jim and maybe establish a new, effective partnership. His only rule is have fun — win or lose — on the way onward and upward from the C flight to the A flight. Jim’s wife Sue has no interest in Bridge but is very active in quilting and sewing and has joined some of the many available clubs. They love the friendliness and the life style here in SaddleBrooke and are looking for a church to join and become involved with. You might even see Jim at the fitness center on occasion—but mostly, we see him at the Bridge tables!
Our games are held Tuesday and Friday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. in the Mariposa Room at DesertView. Table fees are $4. If you need a partner, call Jean Reitan at 520-445-8225 or email her at [email protected].
