Shockingly, only about 31% of Pinal County third graders are reading at grade level. Yes, math buffs, that means that almost 70% of county third graders are not fluent, confident readers. Sadly, it’s almost the same situation across the state. But one county at a time—as my mom would wisely say.
This is vitally important because fourth grade brings more advanced subjects such as math, science, and geography where the teachers expect the kids to be able to read. These teachers focus on the technical aspects of their subjects. As a consequence, weak readers can fall behind very quickly in these subjects.
Well now, I can’t simply state a problem without offering a solution, can I? There is an answer that’s simple, yet powerful: One-on-one online reading tutors from SaddleBrooke to work with kids all across the county for 30 minutes two days a week.
This focused attention on reading is part of a comprehensive program managed by AchievePinal.org that includes training, resources, tools, and support to help ensure that both tutors and kids are successful.
