We Love Literacy!

Donna Thompson

Let’s celebrate the inauguration of our reading tutor program at Mountain Vista School in Oracle. Six SaddleBrooke tutors are working one-on-one in person with 2nd graders each Monday and Wednesday to help improve their reading fluency and comprehension. AchievePinal.org is the implementing agency for our local program and provides all of the materials and coordination.

Just a few weeks into the program and it’s clear that these readers are both excited and talented. Using A-to-Z reader booklets to advance their skills, these students play up to five literacy games until they can read each booklet independently. The student then takes the booklet home to read to other family members, including the family dog. The tutors experience a tremendous sense of pride as these young readers master each level of reading.

This semester, we’ll be tutoring through April. The plan is to expand this program in the fall with more students and more SaddleBrooke tutors. We all live here. We carpool together. And we back each other up.

We’re always looking for more reading tutors and subs. If you want to be a part of this life-changing program as an in-person or online tutor, a sub, or a donor, please drop a line to arizonaliteracy@outlook.com. You’ll be glad you did!
