MPMGA Plays Through the Summer Heat

Jim Grosjean

When afternoon temperatures routinely reach triple digits this summer in SaddleBrooke, the MPMGA continues its weekly golf events at 7:30 a.m. like clockwork. Recently, the threeday Individual Match Play Tournament was contested on the MountainView Golf Course.

Before turning to tournament results, it should be said that golfers are very happy with the outcome of the renovation of MountainView. Beautiful tee boxes, fairways, and greens were obvious to the naked eye but, more importantly, pump stations, irrigation lines, and a host of underground improvements have been made that will ensure quality golf for years to come. The new cart path between the 9th and 10th holes makes the transition between those holes safer and faster. I believe that a growing season or two will result in a course that SaddleBrooke can be proud of.

The list of winners of the Match Play Finals reads like a Who’s Who of SaddleBrooke’s finest golfers. They are Terry Martell, Jim Creel, Darryl Henderson, Angelo Klousiadis, Paul Caleb, Don Plapinger, Dick Helms, David Jones, Doug Anderson, Doug Zink, Alan Doan, and Pete Gregor. Most of the finals matches were hotly contested, with four matches decided after extra holes were played. For those unfortunate golfers who didn’t qualify for the final day of matches, an alternative tournament was offered. Known affectionately as the Whiners Tournament, the event allowed participants to utilize their full handicap and also throw out their worst four holes. The flight winners (i.e., Biggest Whiners) were Gary Coella, Glen Hanson, Chris Nelson, and Scott Newberry.

Our après-tournament luncheon was held on Aug. 1 and was open to all members, whether playing in the tournament or not.

It’s never too late to join the MPMGA. Just shoot an email to Dave Quesnell at [email protected] to receive an application.
