The inaugural Masters Par 3 event was held at the MountainView Golf Course on April 10 (the same day as the Part 3 Tournament at Augusta National). There were 72 golfers, ranging in age and skill set, competing for a green jacket—one for men and one for the ladies. The shotgun start began at 4 p.m. with temperatures in the mid-70s and a slight breeze. The back 9 holes were set up as par 3s, placing Men’s and Ladies’ tee boxes on the fairways, with distances ranging from 100 to 140 yards.
Jo Helms, a MountainView/Preserve Women’s Golf Association member, had the overall low score of 27 and was the Ladies winner. Before the event, winner Helms said, “I had an extremely busy day, with a haircut and playing Mah Jongg, so I only had time to putt three balls, and then off I went. I don’t know how I did it!” Linda Linegar had the next lowest Ladies score of 29.
Jeff Cashmore, a MountainView/Preserve Men’s Golf Association member, shot a 28 and was the Men’s winner. Cashmore, still working a day job, did manage to get to the course to warm up. Playing alongside good friend Jim Bolme, both were in contention until the last hole, where Cashmore managed to make a five-foot putt to clinch the Men’s win. Cashmore said, “There were a lot of interesting and challenging pin placements.” Bolme and Dave Henry tied for the Men’s second lowest score of 29.
There were no holes-in-one. Gary Walker and Evelyn Walker got closest-to-pin on hole 13, and Jennie Henry and Pat Dresser got closest-to-pin awards on hole 17. Resident pro Mike Karpe presented the winners with a traditional green jacket at an awards presentation and dinner in the MountainView ballroom following the event. Per Karpe, “The MountainView logo will be embroidered on each jacket, and next year the winners will select the menu for the Champions Dinner.” Thanks to Karpe for organizing this great event.
