Unit 3 Men’s Luncheon at the Vistas
On Aug. 8 at 11:30 a.m. the men from Unit 3 met at the Vistas for lunch. Everyone enjoyed visiting and relaxing. The staff servers were superb, and the food was delectable.
Our next outing will be on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 11:30 a.m. Keep your eyes on your email for your reminder.
Unit Nine Goes Out for Dinner

Forty-two members of Unit Nine went to the Cadillac Chaparral Restaurant for dinner in mid-August. The menu included barbeque pork ribs, New York steak, and hamburgers. The restaurant has a definite Western theme, and we all sat at long tables. Service was good, and the meals were mostly agreeable. Everyone had a wonderful time and would go back again. Ann Adams, our unit manager, arranged for the trip and sent out the menus in advance. Thanks, Ann!
Unit 27 Activities

Jane Spande and Dave Field hosted the Snack and Chat on Aug. 12. Rain had been intermittent during the preceding week and was forecasted for the night of the party, and Jane was somewhat concerned that the event might have to be held inside. She was more concerned when a very large number of neighbors arrived. However, Mother Nature smiled on her and sent a misty drizzle at the beginning of the evening, which stopped as quickly as it came and lowered the temperature just enough to make it very comfortable outside. And so the party continued, with neighbors gathering both inside and out. With more attendees, the food was quite plentiful and varied. No one could say that they didn’t get enough to eat that night. Congratulations and thanks, Jane and Dave!
Unit 27 has had a history of active residents, and no one has been more active than Jan Talbot. As one of the early residents, she started a Friday nine-hole ladies golf group in 2002, which exists to this day. Back then, many of the participants were just starting out in the game, and the “oldies” have some humorous memories of those early days. Darlene, our first unit rep, was known for “hitting ‘em straight,” 50 yards apiece. Jan says she has taken over for Darlene in the 50-yard drives category. Donna was one of the nicest people ever, but no one wanted to ride in her golf cart, because, unlike her swing, her cart driving was not straight! Melody, who is still with the group, insisted on going into the barranca and other OB areas to find her (and others’) balls. And Sue put an exclamation point on the word, “whiff!” Jan says she still talks about the day she and Sue played in the rain, ala Caddyshack. And it wasn’t even their best round. The caliber of play has increased since those early days, but the participants still have fun. The most recent bit of humor was the day a foursome was hitting up to a green and a coyote walked onto the green and left a pile, just as Lynda was about to drive. Luckily, Lynda’s drive was more accurate than the coyote’s droppings, and disaster was averted. Any Unit 27 lady golfer who wants to play nine holes and have fun is welcome to contact Jan. Oh, yes, lunch or breakfast before or after play has always been part of the outing.
Unit 28 Lunches, Brunches, and Happy Hours

What has the unit been up to in 2023? The unit members have been having great gatherings each month, meeting and visiting with neighbors from Skyline Drive and Mesa Court.
Starting the new year off with a beautiful Winter Gala in January at the MountainView ballroom, with candlelight dinner and dancing to music by DJ Bob Osbourne, the unit was excited to see that after the long pandemic, the Social Committee has planned some exciting events.
The ladies have been gathering for special luncheons the second Thursday of each month. Averaging around 15 to 20 ladies, they have spent the year thus far with a February lunch at the SaddleBrooke Ranch House, a March lunch on The Preserve patio, an April brunch-style potluck at Sue Skeen’s house, drinks and appetizers at poolside in May hosted by Alfie Fujitani Eldridge, and in June the ladies drove to the Patio restaurant in Oracle. There was no gathering in July, as too many ladies were vacationing, but in August we had a great lunch at the Grain River Asian Bistro (Rancho Vistoso Center).
The men’s luncheons have been organized by Unit Rep Ian Ewing. It appears The Preserve has been the favorite choice location. They have averaged around 10 to 15 men who have a great time eating and chatting it up. They typically meet around the third week of the month, but it can vary (watch for Ian’s email with time and dates).
We also have our combined monthly Happy Hour at 4 p.m. every third Tuesday in the East Room at MountainView.
The committee has a few other upcoming events in the workings. We wish to welcome back the “snowbirds” with an Oct. 24 Oktoberfest Potluck at the SaddleBrooke One tennis pavilion. Hopefully, it will not be as cold outside as it was last year. In the new year we are organizing a Red Carpet Gala scheduled for Feb. 27 in the MountainView ballroom, with candlelight dinner and dancing. Be sure to save these dates on your calendar. We look forward to more fun times together with our Unit 28 neighbors.
Unit 49 Summer Fun

Unit 49 found the best way to cool off from the summer heat at our annual Ice Cream Social on Aug. 13. The capacity crowd of 75 hungry guests met at the SaddleBrooke One Activity Center to enjoy sundaes, floats, and great company. The event was such a hit that the monsoon even decided to make an appearance … all rain is welcome!. This was the perfect “kick-off” to our fall schedule, with upcoming events including a visit to the Dolly Steamboat, Oktoberfest Potluck, Spooktacular Halloween Party, and our annual Holiday Party and Cookie Exchange. Our Dining Divas have been busy filling the calendar for the monthly luncheon, and our newly formed Dining Dudes are preparing for their first event.
Unit 49 is definitely a fun place to live and play. A big thank you to our Social Committee volunteers for all their hard work on these activities.
