Rick Morrison, Wagon Master
A group of RVs made their way to Apache Junction for a week of sightseeing, get-togethers and nights out at various venues in the area. The weather was beautiful, making it just right for nightly cocktail and hors d’oeuvres at the Wagon Master’s rig. Of course, as is typical in SaddleBrooke, the food was wonderful and plentiful. In fact, there were enough leftovers for additional potlucks.
A day trip was planned for the Dolly Steamboat tour of Canyon Lake. This excursion was informative of the area’s geologic sights as well as the animals that inhabit the canyon, offering many opportunities for great photos. Following the tour, the group drove the short distance to Tortilla Flat for a lunch at the Tortilla Flat Superstition Saloon. Tortilla Flat got its name from a nearby butte that resembles a tortilla.
An evening at Barleen’s Dinner Show (formerly known as the Arizona Opry) was the consensus highlight of the trip. The food was plentiful and delicious with dessert served first! They served 500 people in 18 minutes! This family musical revue lasted over 2.5 hours with each member singing and playing multiple instruments. While the show is on hiatus during the summer, it is a not-to-be-missed event in the fall/winter.
Since this club certainly appreciates having a good time, our final night out was spent at Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa. Along with enjoying great pizza, we were entertained with music played on the largest Wurlitzer pipe organ in the world. This huge instrument fills nearly every space in the large building and is a wonder to see.
Of course, the trip was not all food. There was plenty of opportunity for folks to explore the area on their own, visiting the Mesa Swap Meet, antiquing at local stores, the Queen Creek Olive Mill (couldn’t resist bringing some home), Fort McDowell Casino among many other area attractions, or to just simply relax.
Some of the upcoming trips planned are to Show Low, Lake Havasu, Cottonwood near Sedona, an FMCA RV Rally here in Tucson and a cultural focused trip to Phoenix. Anyone with an RV in SaddleBrooke is welcome to join us when we meet again on September 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the SaddleBrooke One Activity Center.
