The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6 and lasts for 40 days, not including Sundays. This marks the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert, fasting and resisting temptations. It is a solemn observance and preparation for the death of Jesus and His resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Many Christians place ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday as a symbol of sorrow and mourning over personal sins. Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church (MSPC) will begin the season with a service of worship at 4:00 p.m., including calm, soul-searching music that includes vocal solos, choral arrangements and instrumental pieces which embrace this season of reflection, prayer, charitable giving and personal transformation.
In addition to Sunday Lenten worship services MSPC will celebrate Palm Sunday on April 14 at 10:00 a.m., honoring Jesus’ triumphant arrival in Jerusalem. Worshippers will be provided with eco-friendly palms and invited to enter the sanctuary waving the palms and singing praise. The procession will be led by song, hand bells, flute music and those palms.
Maundy Thursday worship will take place on April 18 at 5:00 p.m. It will include the remembrance of Jesus’ final days and the sharing of The Lord’s Supper. Worship will be followed by a simple soup meal. To attend the meal, call the church 825-7858 to let them know you wish to be present.
Easter Sunday offers two joyful services celebrating Christ’s resurrection, one outdoors at 8:00 a.m., complete with music and scriptures. A traditional service will also be held in the sanctuary at 10:00 a.m.
