The Spanish Culture Club of SaddleBrooke (SCC) is a culture club, not a language club. It is composed of a group of social and intellectually curious Brookers that seek to expand their knowledge of Latin culture within the Old Pueblo and beyond. This is accomplished through monthly meetings that include speakers and tapas buffets, twice-monthly Spanish-speaking breakfasts and excursions to local events and restaurants.
Officers for the new year are Kathy Volpe (president), Marian Brook (vice president), Barbara Levinson (secretary) and Riley Jackson (treasurer).
Spanish-speaking (definitely not required) breakfasts meet on the second and fourth Mondays at 8:30 a.m. (note new time for the winter). This month breakfast will be on January 9 at the Bistro and on January 22 at the Roadrunner. February’s breakfasts are on February 13 at the Bistro and February 27 at the Roadrunner.
January’s plans include a presentation on The History of Mexican Art from the Olmecs and Aztecs through the Twentieth Century by Tammy Bearden, SaddleBrooke resident and docent at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. We will discuss and view artworks by Mexican muralists Rivera, Siqueiros and Orozco as well as Posada and Tamayo. Join us at the Activity Center on January 16 at 5:30 p.m. Bring a tapa to share and a beverage of your choice. Monthly meetings are the third Monday of the month.
On January 22 we will enjoy a showing of the DVD Frida. The movie depicts the tumultuous life of Frida Kahlo, renowned Mexican artist and wife of Diego Rivera, from her teenage years to her death. The showing will be in the Sonoran Room at MountainView from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. followed by a no-host happy hour at the Bistro Bar.
February’s meeting will be on February 20 and will be our exciting annual Spanish Trivial Pursuit competition.
Please join us at our next meeting. If you choose to become a member, the annual fee is $20. For more information contact President Kathy Volpe ([email protected], 520-818-9174).
