Potential new members discuss the steps and calls.

Sunday, October 9, 2016 saw the start of the SaddleBrooke Square Dance Club’s twenty-first year of square dance lessons. The club’s square dance caller, Larry Kraber, has been teaching these lessons in SaddleBrooke since the formation of the club over 20 years ago.

The square dance lessons get started each year with a Give Us A Whirl (GUAW) demonstration on how much fun and how easy learning and re-learning square dancing can be. This year’s GUAW filled the MountainView Ballroom with a large group of those wanting to learn more as well as those club members wanting to help and encourage potential new members.

Larry, with his great love of square dancing, starts right out with his proven method of demonstrating a group of calls followed by the students and members going through the calls. In a very short time he had us doing do-c-dos, swing your partner and promenade as well as other basic square dance calls. As the evening progressed it was very easy to observe a change come over the group. At first there were looks of concern among some of the new students as to how they would remember the this and that of the calls but, within minutes, the flow of the steps and calls were being easily followed. The concerns soon changed to smiles and laughs as the old timers and the new folks became a cohesive square.

It was all over too soon, but lessons started in earnest on Sunday, October 16 and will continue for 15 weeks. There is still a little time left to jump in or watch for the next GUAW announcement – number 22 – coming to a place near you in 2017.
