It was Oct. 23. Though a little unseasonably warm, the frequent breezes were welcome. Sixty-six individuals lined up at 18 different holes on the MountainView putting course. Each team of four people gave themselves a team name. When the cry “Begin Putting” was heard, all 66 began to putt their hearts out, each putter in search of the secret money hole (in one) during the event.
Throughout the next 90 minutes, you overheard the sighs of despair as those little colored balls rolled ever so gently past their mark, the yelps of joy as other balls dropped into the depths of the four-inch-wide goals they were aimed at, and sometimes the “oh no disbelief” when balls seemed to have minds of their own as they ringed around holes but failed to fall in.
As putters recorded their final scores and handed in their scorecards to the committee, they now had the opportunity to enjoy a cocktail of their choice in the East Ballroom. A seated dinner was held for the putter teams to enjoy the meals they had previously selected (pork, chicken, or vegetarian), and everyone seemed to very much enjoy meeting new putting enthusiasts and reconnecting with old friends.
The Putter Partners Committee spent a bit of time reviewing scores and awarding the first and second place teams, as well as defining the winner(s) of the money hole.
First place: Loralee Horwedel, Larry McNamee, Ruth Sollin, and Dan Sollin ($10 each)
Second place ended in a tie: Ron Smith, Pam Smith, Cherie Haydeck, and Fira Stout ($5 each) and Eileen Snearly, Elizabeth Lukritz, Raye Cobb, and Karel Titone ($5 each)
Money hole winners: Joan Brookhart, Dale Norgard, and Fira Stout (three winners at $22 each)
