The theme has been selected for the 2018 Variety Show and it is SaddleBrooke’s Got Talent! This will be a showcase of the various talents of SaddleBrooke and SaddleBrooke Ranch residents and will not be a competition. Whether it is song, dance, instrumental or spoken, your talent may be just what we need.

Although the actual dates have not yet been approved by HOA 2, we are planning to hold auditions on two dates in November 2017; therefore, it is not too early to be planning.

To find out whether a piece of music you might want to perform will be permitted under the DesertView Theater’s BMI license agreement, go to this BMI website: www.bmi.com/search.

On the left side of the site, look for Search of BMI Repertoire. Then type in a song title, which will bring up all the versions of the song. Select a specific arrangement of the song (look at composer/arranger to be sure you have the right one). If you do not find your song’s arrangement, you may need to pick a different arrangement of the song. Warning: Only up to three songs from any Broadway show or movie musical can be used in the entire Variety Show!

For the dance groups’ individuals, choreography must be original. Likewise, sketches or monologues must be original to avoid copyright infringement and performance licensing problems. Sketches on such themes as a bad audition experience, a costume nightmare, a heckled performance, rival show competitors, etc., might fit in quite well. If you can find The Art of Sketch by Lindsay Price, published in Spotlight: E-News from Theatrefolk, Issue 20, it gives a very good commentary on what makes a good sketch.

If you have any questions regarding the licensing or copyright issues discussed in this article, please contact Gail Nelli at 825-9658.

We are still seeking people to help us behind the scenes as well as performers. If you have a talent or interest in publicity or marketing or in any aspect of musical or theater production, we would love to hear from you. This is our community theater and we can’t do it without you!
