MPWGA hosted this year’s 12th Annual Mars/Venus event on Feb. 4 and 6, with 21 teams from Mountainview/Preserve Men’s and Women’s Golf Association. This event has evolved from men versus women to mixed teams of both sexes, allowing the most competitive of handicaps, some great banter, and an opportunity to meet different golfers in the community. The weather gods delivered, and both days were gorgeous, with clear skies and warm temperatures. Special thanks to Jenni Long and Jane Megrdle for chairing and The Moore Advantage Group for delivering above and beyond as event sponsor.
Round 1 was a Step Aside Scramble at The Preserve Golf Club with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Round 2, at MountainView Golf Club, was 2 Net Best Balls. Overall results were grouped in two flights, and Closest to Pin (KP) competitions for both Mars and Venus were on all the par 3 holes. Following the event, a lunch was held at the MountainView ballroom where hungry golfers piled on a variety of fixins’ at a sandwich and pasta bar while they waited to hear the final scores.
For KPs, $10 payouts were awarded. KP winners for Round 1 were as follows: Hole 4: Kathy Cossari and Pete LeBeau, Hole 6: Susan Salmeri and Mike Bershaw, Hole 11: Ann Van Sickel and Rick Fernandez, Hole 14: Susan Salmeri and Terry McCarthy. KP winners for Round 2 were as follows: Hole 4: Tana Lucy and Larry McNamee, Hole 8: Jan Berrigan and Mike Bershaw, Hole 13: Randi Roberts and Paul Zapf, Hole 17: Tana Lucy and Tony Blunt.
First-place teams received payouts of $40 each. Additionally, Flight 1 paid out through a fifth-place tie, and Flight 2 paid out through a three-way, third-place tie! In Flight 1, the first-place team was Al Bolty, Pete LeBeau, Jane Megrdle, and Jenni Farquhar. The team credited LeBeau for keeping things moving fast. Megrdle said, “Pete was very positive. He kept everyone laughing.” LeBeau was so fast, in fact, that he finished lunch and left before the team picture was taken! In Flight 2, the first-place team was Paul Zapf, Larry McNamee, Kathy Cossari, and Debbie Ogle. McNamee’s comments on team strategy was that he was the straight driver, Zapf was the long driver, and Cossari and Ogle were good putters. He said his team’s best day was at The Preserve where he had KP on hole 8 and Zapf made an eagle on hole 15. Ogle said, “We had a super time. We all ‘chipped’ in when we needed to.”
