The weekend of August 6 and 7, 2016, five SaddleBrooke Swim Team members participated in the Arizona Masters State Long Course swim meet at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Both days proved to be a challenging meet for all five swimmers. Each spent time preparing and training on his/her own. This included swimming the long course pool at Oro Valley and SaddleBrooke. Each person selected their own events.

Four of the five swimmers took highest point in their age group, representing four different age groups!

For their efforts Nancy Pepek, Bev Schulz, Ed Thompson and Allison Lehman each received a coveted embroidered towel with the event name, date and location. Lyn Moreno took second highest point in her age group.

Nancy Pepek swam five events, 50 free, 50 back, 100 breast and 100 free. She earned first place in each event! She had a personal best in the 100 free. She attributes her success from participating in the SaddleBrooke Swim Club Let’s Swim program held this past July.

Beverly Schulz swam eight events and earned first place in each event! She had four personal best times in four events, the 400 meter free, 800 meter free, 50 meter breast and 50 meter free. Bev said, “All in all what better way to spend a hot weekend.” It should be noted that Bev also swam 1500 on Saturday, just a hair slower than two years ago. So she pushed really hard on Sunday and was two minutes faster than two years ago! She attributes her fast times to her private lessons from the coach and a lot of practice.

Ed Thompson swam seven events and earned first place in each event. He had a personal best in two events, the 50 free and 100 IM. Both of these events were swum faster than his previous record from five years ago.

Allison Lehman swam eight events. She had personal best times in five events, the 200 free, 400 free, 100 free, 200 breast and 50 free. She dropped five seconds in her 200 free from two years ago. She is most proud of the fact that she swam faster than people who have been swimming competitively a lot longer than she has.

Lyn Moreno swam eight events taking second highest point winner in her age group. This was her first time swimming a long course event. She had three personal best times in the 800 free, 100 and 200 backstroke.

A special thanks to Fred Pepek for helping to all our swimmers that weekend.

As the Olympics were starting it provided inspiration for all of the above to do their best in each event they entered.

The SaddleBrooke club practice swims several mornings a week at DesertView pool. Come on down and check out the schedule, other articles and photos under the covered area near the water fountain.
