Spanish Culture Club news

The Spanish Culture Club (SCC) of SaddleBrooke is a culture club, not a language club. It is composed of a group of social and intellectually curious Brookers that seek to expand their knowledge of Latin culture within the Old Pueblo and beyond. This is accomplished through monthly meetings that include speakers and tapas buffets, twice-monthly Spanish-speaking breakfasts and excursions to local events and restaurants.

Spanish-Speaking (definitely not required) breakfasts meet on the second and fourth Mondays at 8:30 a.m. Upcoming breakfasts are on April 24 at the Roadrunner, May 8 at the Bistro and May 22 at the Roadrunner.

Spanish-Speaking Only Lunches are on the first Monday of each month at the Bistro. May’s lunch is May 1. Drop by and practice your language skills.

At our March meeting we listened to an excellent presentation by Jim Turner, local historian, author and raconteur, titled For God, Gold and Glory: Coronado’s Journey from Mexico to Kansas, 1540-1542.

On Saturday, March 25 the club enjoyed a traditional tapas and paella dinner at Contigo Latin Kitchen.

On April 3 we met at the Reforma Restaurant at St. Phillip’s Square for a no-host lunch and then participated in a docent-led tour of the Frieda Kahlo exhibit at the Tucson Botanical Gardens.

On April 17 Judith Schram, local docent and linguist, will give a presentation on Living and Learning Mazatec Culture and Language at our regular monthly meeting. Join us at the Activity Center on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. Bring a potluck dish to share and a beverage of your choice. Monthly meetings are the third Monday of the month.

The club has reserved tables for the Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Vistas on May 6.

Our May 15 meeting will be a Latin Wine and Cheese Social. Each person brings a favorite Latin American or Spanish wine to share and the club provides cheese and fruit.

Please join us at our next meeting. If you choose to become a member, the annual fee is $20. For more information on our activities contact President Kathy Volpe ([email protected], 520-818-9174).
