SaddleBrooke Democrat Club welcomes 2011 Safeway shooting survivor

Tim Koch

At its recent monthly meeting, the SaddleBrooke Democrat Club welcomed as guest speakers Pat Maisch and Meg Pradelt of Gun Violence Prevention Arizona (gvpa) who spoke on their advocacy activities including their Candidates Gun Safety Report Card, a comprehensive guide to the position on gun safety topics of candidates for federal, county and state-wide offices.

Pat Maisch’s advocacy for safe and responsible gun ownership began as a result of her being at Gabby Gifford’s Congress on the Corner event on January 8, 2011. Pat described her role along with two other heroic ‘good guys without a gun’ in subduing and restraining Jarred Loughner. It was Pat who retrieved the additional bullet clip/magazine preventing Loughner from inflicting more injury. Pat also described the effective triage work of the three doctors who just happened to be shopping at the Safeway that morning. By the time ambulances and first responders arrived, according to Pat, the three doctors had already identified those who needed immediate transport while attending to the wounds of others.

Further information on GVPA is available at gvparizona.org or by emailing [email protected].

In addition to Maisch and Pradelt, the club also heard briefly from candidates for Corporation Commission, Bill Mundell and Sandra Kennedy.

Dem Club Program Chair Fran Berman provided information regarding recent bills introduced by our local state representatives and also accepted a motion to increase club dues.

The SaddleBrooke Democrat Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the SaddleBrooke One Activity Center.
