The end of summer is a time of anticipation. Soon fall will be in the air. And it also is a time for reflection on the many memories that keep our summers with us forever.

We recall our University of Arizona Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team events, the Club Championships, the slate of nominees for next year’s Board of Directors, the successful introduction of Men’s OPUS and our wonderful Ice Cream Social. We recall the evenings on the cool STC patio after hard matches and the monsoon storms that provided such excitement and, above all, rain. All of these things are now locked in our hearts. Only our tennis friends will know exactly what we are talking about when we say things like, “Do you remember last summer when we—?”

Cindy Madsen led the memorialization of our summer memories with a Labor Day Party. She obtained really old photographs of current STC members. Then she conducted a contest to determine who could recognize the most faces in the photos. The lapse of 50 years or so has had its peculiar effect on our looks. That made the challenge extremely difficult. Several of us could only identify one or two photos. It required great facial detective work and a very good imagination.

Mary Hlushko won a tennis lesson with Pro Chris Madsen for recognizing 17 photographs. David Lamb won a free string job from our Master Stringer, Steve Leane, by identifying 16 photos. Melanie Murphy received a movie gift card for recognizing 14 photos. Mary, David and Melanie excelled at no mean task in making the identifications because appearances have changed significantly over the last 50 years. It would be understandable if the FBI sent employment applications to each of you.

STC events like our Labor Day Party are the grist for our delightful retirement mill. Fifty-three players faced off under the afternoon sun to play mixed doubles. Melanie Murphy, Carol Eisenbraun and Debbie McGeehan arranged the matches. Here are special thanks to each of you because lots of exercise was required to offset the delicious calories that followed the games. Almost two dozen wonderful appetizers were created and donated by our members to help ensure a proper balance between calories and exercise.

Parties like those we offer at STC are possible only because of the selfless effort of our club members who volunteer to decorate our patio, set up the tables and chairs, lay out the many appetizers and make cold lemonade. Our thanks to each of you!

Finally, we want to welcome some of the new members who just joined STC. Thanks for joining and thanks for coming to our party. We greet Bruce and Mary Williams, Lorna and Mark Kitchen, John and Dee Neeley and Gary Stithen.

It is a pleasure to belong to the STC where we are dedicated to the health and well-being of our SaddleBrooke  neighbors.
